Methods of Screening and Diagnosis

Gallstones often get detected while you are being examined for unrelated conditions, such as pregnancy, during an X-ray or scan. Your doctor will ask questions about your symptoms and also conduct a physical examination to exclude some of the probable causes from the list of possibilities. Besides this, he may conduct imaging tests to diagnose gall bladder problems. A few of them are explained below:

Ultrasound scan: This is a harmless and painless test that uses sound waves to create pictures of your gall bladder. A technician glides a hand held device over your abdomenthat sends high-frequency sound waves towards the gall bladder. These sound waves bounce off the gall bladder and the resulting echoes induce electrical impulses, which produce a picture of the gall bladder on a video screen.

Gall bladder scan: There are cases where the ultrasound record may be normal; however your doctor may still suspect a problem. As a part of this procedure, a special radioactive dye is injected into a vein in your arm. Pictures are then taken to determine the condition of the gall stone

Cholangiography: In this procedure, your doctor views the bile ducts using a flexible optical-fibre tube called endoscope. With the help of this instrument, he injects a special dye into the bile duct that shows up on X-rays. In this way, blockages in the bile duct caused by gall stones can be detected. The detected gallstones can then be removed.

Blood tests: Blood tests are done to check and rule out other conditions that might be caused due to the malfunctioning of the liver or pancreas. These include Complete blood count and liver function tests.
